Dry Skin in Autumn: 7 Habits to Keep Your Skin Comfortable
Cold air, wind and central heating can leave your skin feeling dry. These seven simple habits help keep it supple and comfortable all autumn.
Dry skin in autumn is something many people recognise. Cold air outside, wind and central heating indoors ask a little more of your skin in these months. With seven simple habits you can help your skin stay supple and comfortable, without a complicated routine.
Dry skin in autumn: what causes it?
As soon as the temperature drops, a lot changes around you. Outside it is cold and windier. Inside, the heating goes on, and warm indoor air is often dry. All day long, your skin moves back and forth between those two worlds.
On top of that, we tend to take long, hot showers in autumn and spend more time indoors. Many people know the result: skin that feels tight after washing, rough patches on the cheeks, chapped hands and lips that quickly feel dry. The good news is that small changes can already make a difference.
7 habits to keep your skin comfortable
1. Take lukewarm, short showers
A hot shower feels wonderful when the weather is grim, but hot water can leave your skin feeling drier. Choose lukewarm water and keep it short. Afterwards, gently pat your skin dry with a towel instead of rubbing.
2. Watch the humidity indoors
Heating dries out the air at home. A humidifier can help, as can a few plants or a bowl of water near the radiator. Do not turn the heating up higher than needed, and air out your home regularly.
3. Apply your cream to slightly damp skin
Apply your cream while your skin is still a little damp after washing or showering. A rich cream can then help hold on to that moisture. Your skin often feels soft for longer than when you wait until it is completely dry.
4. Do not forget your lips and hands
You wash your hands often, and your lips face the wind all day. These are exactly the spots that feel dry quickly in autumn. Apply a little cream after washing your hands, wear gloves when it is cold and keep a lip balm in your coat or bag.
5. Choose a richer layer in the evening
During the day you may want a thin layer that absorbs quickly. In the evening you have more time and can be a little more generous. A slightly richer layer before bed is a pleasant ritual for many people, especially after a day in the wind or a warm office.
6. Drink enough water
Drinking water is good for your overall wellbeing. It is not a direct fix for dry skin, but it is part of taking good care of yourself. In autumn we often drink less because we feel less thirsty. A cup of tea counts too.
7. Do not use too many products
When your skin feels dry, it is tempting to put all sorts of things on it. Yet keeping it simple can feel better. With fewer products, it is easier to learn what your skin likes. A mild cleanser and a good cream are often enough.
Why tallow is lovely in the colder months
Tallow is purified beef fat and naturally contains fatty acids that also occur in your own skin. It is a rich ingredient, which is why many people enjoy it even more when the weather turns cold. Our creams are whipped, so they feel light and you only need a little. Take a small amount, warm it between your fingers and press it gently into your skin.
Our autumn picks
The Natural - Sensitive Skin is fragrance-free and has just three ingredients: grass-fed tallow, MCT oil and vitamin E. A calm choice if your skin feels more sensitive in autumn or if you prefer no scent.
Velvet Lavender - Day Cream has a soft lavender scent and is made with four ingredients: tallow, MCT oil, lavender oil and vitamin E. Lovely if you enjoy a calming scent, for example as an evening ritual on the sofa.
Both creams come in 60 ml and cost €24.95. Do not forget your lips either: our Sweet Orange Lip Balm fits easily in your coat pocket. Every skin reacts differently, so always do a patch test on a small area of skin when trying a new cream.
Frequently asked questions
Is it normal for my skin to feel drier in autumn?
Many people notice their skin feels drier once it gets colder and the heating comes on. If your skin stays very dry or irritated even with good care, or if you are worried, ask your GP for advice.
Can I use tallow cream under make-up?
Yes, you can. Use a thin layer and give the cream a few minutes to absorb before applying make-up. In the evening you can be more generous.
How often should I apply my cream in autumn?
Most people apply it in the morning and evening. If your skin feels dry in between, your hands for example, feel free to add a little more.
